Karnataka TET 2025: Complete Eligibility, Age Limit & Paper 1-2 Criteria

The Karnataka Teacher Eligibility Test (Karnataka TET or KARTET) is an important step for anyone who dreams of becoming a teacher in Karnataka. It is a state-level exam conducted by the Karnataka School Education Department, following the guidelines of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

For many aspiring teachers, Karnataka TET is more than just an examination it is a gateway to a meaningful and respected career in education.

Karnataka TET is meant for those who wish to teach students from Classes I to VIII in government and aided schools across the state. Clearing this exam is mandatory for candidates who want to work as primary teachers (Classes I–V) or upper primary teachers (Classes VI–VIII). It also serves as an essential qualification for many private school teaching positions.

Stages of the Exam

KARTET keeps the process simple and straightforward. Unlike many other competitive exams, it does not include multiple stages like interviews or skill tests. Instead, it focuses mainly on a written examination.

Your eligibility is determined by how well you perform in this exam, which is designed according to the teaching level you want to apply for either primary or upper primary.

Written Examination

The main stage of the Karnataka TET is the written exam. It is conducted in offline (OMR-based) mode and consists of two papers:

  1. Paper I (For Classes I–V)

This paper is for candidates who want to become primary school teachers. It includes:

Note: For visually impaired candidates, Social Studies is offered instead of Mathematics and Environmental Studies in Paper I, and it carries a total of 60 marks.

Negative Marking: None
Syllabus: It generally covers topics from Classes 1 to 8, based on either the NCERT curriculum or the Karnataka State syllabus, the difficulty standard of the questions is usually up to the 10th standard level.

 2. Paper II (For Classes VI–VIII)

This paper is for candidates who want to teach upper primary classes. It includes:

Qualification

  1. Qualification for Paper I (Classes I–V): Candidates who wish to teach primary classes (1st to 5th) must have:
      • Passed PUC / 12th standard with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories)
                                                      AND
    • Completed or be pursuing D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education)
                                                         OR
    • Completed B.El.Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education)
  2. Qualification for Paper II (Classes VI–VIII): Candidates who wish to teach upper primary classes (6th to 8th) must have:
    • A Bachelor’s Degree (BA / BSc / BCom) with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories)
                                                         AND
    • Completed or be pursuing B.Ed (Bachelor of Education)
                                                          OR
    • Completed B.A.Ed. / B.Sc.Ed (Integrated B.Ed course)
  3. For Candidates Applying for Both Levels:
    • If a candidate wants to teach Classes I to VIII, they must meet the qualifications for both Paper I and Paper II and appear for both papers.
    • Final-year students in D.El.Ed or B.Ed are also eligible to apply.

Age Limit

One of the advantages of KARTET is that the age criteria are simple:

  • Minimum Age: 18 years
  • Maximum Age: There is no upper age limit

Detailed Syllabus by Subject

  1. Child Development and Pedagogy (30 Marks)

This section focuses on the educational psychology of teaching and learning relevant to the specific age group (6–11 years for Paper 1; 11–14 years for Paper 2).

    • Child Development: Concepts of development, heredity, and environment.
    • Theories: Piaget, Kohlberg, and Vygotsky (constructs and critical perspectives).
    • Inclusive Education: Addressing learners from diverse backgrounds and children with special needs.
    • Learning & Pedagogy: How children think and learn; motivation and classroom management.
  1. Languages (Language I & Language II – 30 Marks Each)
    • Language I (Instructional Medium): Focuses on proficiencies related to the medium of instruction.
    • Language I options typically include regional languages like Kannada, Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and English.
    • Candidates must select one as their medium of instruction.
    • Language II (Communication): Focuses on language elements, communication, and comprehension.
    • The primary available option for Language II is English.
    • Other languages, such as Urdu and Sanskrit, may be available depending on specific notification updates

Key Topics: Reading unseen passages, grammar, and the pedagogy of language development (learning and acquisition).

  1. Mathematics (30 Marks for Paper 1; 60 Marks for Paper 2 Math/Science)
    • Paper 1: Numbers, fractions, basic arithmetic operations, geometry (shapes and spatial understanding), weight, time, and data handling.
    • Paper 2: Number system, Algebra (linear equations, identities), Geometry (triangles, circles, quadrilaterals), Trigonometry, Mensuration, and Statistics.
  1. Environmental Studies (30 Marks – Paper 1 Only)
    • Our Environment: Ecosystems, food chains, and biodiversity.
    • Living World: Plants, animals, and human health/hygiene.
    • Natural Phenomena: Light, sound, and force.
    • Pedagogy: Aims and objectives of teaching EVS.
  1. Science & Social Science (60 Marks – Paper 2 Only)
    • Science: Physics (Motion, Gravitation, Electricity), Chemistry (Materials, Acids, Bases, Salts), and Biology (Food, Living World, Cell structure).
    • Social Science: History (Ancient to Modern India), Geography (Earth, Resources, Agriculture), Social and Political Life (Constitution, Democracy, Judiciary).
