S Nijalingappa
Context
Punyabhoomi Memorial, dedicated to the former Chief Minister of unified Karnataka, S. Nijalingappa, stands as a physical representation of his integrity and democratic values.
- Located near Seebara village on the outskirts of Chitradurga along the old national highway, the memorial explicitly avoids serving as a monument to power, focusing instead on democratic institutions and Gandhian values.
Architectural Design and Core Values
- The Four Pillars: At the center of the memorial surrounding his samadhi (tomb) stand four tall, distinct pillars. These pillars represent the four pillars of democracy: the Legislature, the Executive, the Judiciary, and the Media. The intentional design highlights his belief that public institutions must outlast individuals and that leadership must remain anchored in systemic values.
- Unification and Connection: Bas-relief sculptures adorn the site. One prominent relief depicts a child holding Nijalingappa’s hand while standing on a map of unified Karnataka, highlighting his monumental role as the architect of the state’s linguistic unification.
- Simplicity and Nature: Designed on a four-acre layout, the expansive campus features tree-lined pathways, manicured gardens, and traditional flora like mango, jackfruit, and parijata trees. This tranquil landscape mirrors his famously simple and honest approach to political life.

A separate high-level committee of experts and retired bureaucrats will safeguard Karnataka’s legal and environmental standing before the Supreme Court and the Central Water Commission.
- Mega Infrastructure Tracking: The unit will drive pending central coordination for high-priority transit projects. This includes the Bengaluru Suburban Rail project, pending regional railway routes, the proposed satellite town Ring Road, and the reopening of HAL Airport for commercial operations.
- Disaster Management Coordination: The secretariat will act as a real-time liaison during natural calamities to speed up the release of central financial relief for droughts and floods.
- Investment Promotion: Bureaucrats will actively pitch to global corporate houses, national industry heads, and foreign investors hosted in the national capital to bring capital to Karnataka.
