Context
Karnataka’s upcoming 200-acre Semiconductor Park located at Phase-1 of KWIN City (Knowledge, Wellbeing and Innovation City) near Bengaluru is officially scheduled to become operational in December 2026.
- Ecosystem Focus: The hub covers the entire semiconductor value chain. It accommodates chip manufacturing, packaging, testing, research and development (R&D), and prototyping.
- Financial Backing: The state has cleared ₹23,000 crore ($230 billion) in advanced electronics and semiconductor investments over the last two years. Major global firms involved include Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Bharat Semi Systems.
- Job Creation: The massive electronics infrastructure project is projected to generate over 3,500 highly-skilled engineering jobs.
- Supply Chain Integration: The initiative explicitly aims to absorb local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) directly into global technology supply chains.

- Nodal Agency: Implemented by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
- Location: Spans across Doddaballapura and Nelamangala taluks in the Bengaluru Rural district. It is located between Dobbaspete and Doddaballapura, roughly 50 km from Bengaluru city center.
- Total Area: Planned across 5,800 acres of land.
- Investment Scale: Estimated at a ₹40,000 crore mega smart-city project developed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

KPCL
Context
Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has significantly increased its thermal power generation by 55% year-on-year.
- The massive scaling effort aims to maintain an uninterrupted, reliable electricity supply across Karnataka. It compensates for a steep drop in hydropower production caused by deficient monsoon rainfall and dwindling reservoir levels.
About Thermal Power Station
- Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS)
- Location: Shaktinagar, Raichur district.
- Significance: The first coal-fired thermal plant established in Karnataka (commissioned in 1985).
- Capacity: 1,720 MW split across 8 operational units (7 x 210 MW + 1 x 250 MW).
- Water Source: Draws cooling water from the Krishna River.
- Ballari Thermal Power Station (BTPS)
- Location: Kudatini village, Ballari district.
- Capacity: 1,700 MW total capacity across 3 units.
- Configuration: Two units of 500 MW each and one supercritical unit of 700 MW.
- Water Source: Utilizes water from the Marala Halli weir on the Tungabhadra River.
- Yermarus Thermal Power Station (YTPS)
- Location: Yermarus, Raichur district.
- Significance: Karnataka’s first coal-based supercritical thermal power plant.
- Capacity: 1,600 MW generated by two highly efficient 800 MW units.
- Water Source: Sources its water supply directly from the Krishna River.
- Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) — Private Sector
- Location: Yellur village, near Padubidri, Udupi district.
- Ownership: Owned by Adani Power (not KPCL, but vital for Karnataka’s state grid).
- Capacity: 1,200 MW generated from imported coal via two 600 MW units.
- Water Source: Uses treated seawater for cooling and processing.

The Dublin-based Heneghan Peng Architects consortium has won a global bid to design India’s first Museum of Innovation, Startup & Technology (MIST) in Bengaluru.
- The internationally acclaimed firm, widely known for designing the historic Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids, was selected through a competitive two-stage evaluation process.
Features
- The Vision: The museum will chronicle India’s rise as a global technology hub while highlighting Bengaluru’s role in driving monumental tech breakthroughs.
- The Location: The landmark campus will be established within the repurposed Switchgear Factory Shed at the historic NGEF campus in Baiyappanahalli. It is situated inside a 105-acre urban forest boasting 65 acres of lush green cover.
- Twin Institutions: The site will be shared between MIST (the public gallery) and Innoverse, a deep-tech innovation campus designed to serve as an incubation hub for global corporate and startup partnerships.
- Collaborative Architecture: The award-winning global consortium will work alongside Bengaluru-based Cadence Architects to execute the project locally.
Development & Timeline
- The PPP Model: The project operates as a Public-Private Partnership. The non-profit UnboxingBLR Foundation owns a 51% stake, while the Government of Karnataka’s Department of ITBT holds the remaining 49% stake.
