iSLEEPS
Context
NIMHANS opens India’s first publicsleep database for stroke patients.
• The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), in collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, has launched iSLEEPS.
• This is Asia’s first open-access, public sleep database specifically dedicated to ischemic stroke patients.
• The project addresses a critical data gap in Asian sleep medicine.
• It aims to significantly improve post-stroke care and rehabilitation.
Key features
- Comprehensive Recordings: Contains 100 overnight polysomnography (PSG) sleep studies.
- Strict Clinical Standards: Data is fully annotated based on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) 2017 Guidelines.
- Granular Tracking: Tracks sleep stages, respiratory events, oxygen desaturation, and periodic limb movements.
Why This Matters for Stroke Recovery
- High Comorbidity: Ischemic stroke survivors often experience a high prevalence of Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) like sleep apnea.
- Neuroplasticity and Repair: High-quality sleep is crucial for brain repair, memory consolidation, and functional recovery after a stroke.
- Preventing Recurrence: Unmanaged sleep disorders can severely hinder physical rehabilitation and increase the risk of a recurrent stroke.
- AI Training Support: The open-source data helps train machine learning models for automated sleep stage classification and early disease screening.
